Kodiak
Alaska
Welcome
Kodiak…the tip of the Aleutian Chain
The Community of Kodiak
Kodiak is the primary community located on Kodiak Island, Alaska. The
2020 census indicates a population of 5,581 citizens. Originally inhabited
by the Alutiiq natives for over 7,000 years (some say 9,000 years!), the
community was settled in the 18th century by subjects of the Russian
crown and became the capital of Russian Alaska.
Russian explorers Vius Bering and Aleksei Chirikov were the first
Europeans to sight Kodiak Island during their 1741 Second Kamchatka
Expedition.
Russian harvesting of the area's sea otter pelts led to near extinction of
the sea otters in the following century and led to wars with and
enslavement of the natives for over 150 years.
When the United States purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867 Kodiak
became a commercial fishing center which continues to be the mainstay
of its economy.
