My father, William (Bill) Eisenberg was born in 1920 and raised in Philadelphia, PA. He served in the Army Air Forces from 1942 until the end of the war in 1945, primarily as a reconnaissance photographer. In 1942, after basic training, he was trained as a photographer at Lowry Field in Denver. In March of 1943 he was sent to the Aleutian Islands and assigned to the 21st Bombardment Squadron, 30th Bombardment Group, which primarily consisted of B-24’s. He was first on Adak, then later on Shemya. Although his time on the islands was relatively brief, he spoke of the harsh conditions and lack of supplies, especially decent food. I recall him saying that at times they ate SPAM for all three meals. When I was growing up, he wouldn’t allow the stuff in the house! I also recall him speaking of the tragedy of the Kiska operation, where many troops were killed by friendly fire. Bill left the Aleutians in September of 1943 when the 21st was sent back to the lower 48. He was then assigned to a B-29 training group in Salina, KS, and later Clovis, NM, where he remained until the war’s end. His rank was Sergeant at the time of separation in November, 1945. The first photo, above left, was taken after returning from Alaska, but shows the “Wee Willie” patch for the 21st Squadron. After the war and until the early 1950s Bill worked for the Navy Aeronautical Photographic Experimental Lab. One of his assignments during that time was to provide the still photography to document some of the earliest jet carrier landings in 1948. Photography was his professional vocation until retirement in 1985. He passed away in 1998, having lived in New Jersey since the mid-1950’s. All locations identified with the pictures are based on Bill’s military photo album. Rob Eisenberg
