My dad, Walt Sowa, was with the 7th Div at Attu in WWII, I think in a quartermaster unit at the time. Anybody know him? I have fotos of him on Attu with a fox he tamed (he was struck by the rich wildlife that managed to survive there).
Thanks!

I was stationed at CG Airstaion Kodiak 91-94 and 97-00. Have many trips to ATTU. Amazing to see all the WWII history still left in all the islands of the chain. Had my share of spending 3 days in Shemya trying to get food and supplies into the LORSTA on ATTU due to the weather. Changes by the minute - literally. I admire those who endure their year tour there - and those who fought there.

Mike Mudd, I was also a flight crew member on Attu and Dutch Harbor and I wonder if it was VPB-61 your father was in? Ken Claypool

ET3 on Attu June 1974-June 1975. Feel lucky to have had the opportunity to be stationed there although at the time the isolation was hard to deal with.

Mmm, looks good. Weather even more miserable than last summer here in Scotland it seems. Might suit buddhist monks perhaps? But it'd be great to visit. I just looked up Attu on Wikipedia and came to this site. Thanks. Very interesting to find out some history and to see the photos. Wishing you all the best.

I was on Atu the day the war was over. I said WOW, and some other words. I have quite a lot of pic. I would be glad to email them to any one that would like. I remember when they blacktop the old steel runway, and lots of other things. would enjoy hearing from any one. We could chat a bit-HUH?

My grandfather, William O. Byrd, was stationed at Attu, and was there when the war ended. He was Army Air Corps, I believe. He was an "old man" on the island, as he was 35 in 1945. He died in 1970. He was not permitted to reveal his location, even to the army newsletter people, until after the war. I'm not sure how many others were under similar gag-orders, or if it applied to everyone on the island.

Was on Attu as member of 349th Engineer Bat. in 1943. Spent several months there. Remember the weather and the tundra and some spectacular scenery ever.
