Joey Alvarado, or "Pooh Bear," as those
near and dear like to call him, was born in Toledo,
Ohio, on the 8th of April, 1991. Joey in many
respects is like most 9-year olds...he was into
Pokemon, collects sports cards, and really enjoys
listening to the Back Street Boys and similar bands.
In several other respects, Joey is different than
most kids...he is into music and science...and has
contracted what is known as Acute Lymphoblastic
Leukemia (ALL).
This type is the most common and most treatable.
The cancer cells are produced in the
lymphocyte, and are not there to help fight
infections. Joey's body was full of these
leukemia cells. We began treatment right away.
The treatment for boys with ALL lasts 3 years
and 2 months. Joey has finished treatment, but
relapsed in his central nervous system on
Thanksgiving. Now we are looking at harder
treatment...a new double lumen central line; many,
many spinal taps and chemo that is so very intense.
My Mom, Stephanie, likes to think of this song
when she thinks of me. Click HERE

If you have a spare moment, send Joey an e-mail,
and let him know you are thinking about him. You can
e-mail him at JOEY.
